The DfE is consulting on proposed changes to school food standards in order to encourage healthier eating. Key changes include the removal of deep fried food and food with a high sugar content. The consultation closes on 12 June 2026.
As outlined in the DfE press release, a worrying one in three children are leaving primary school overweight or obese. Furthermore, tooth decay from diets high in sugar is the leading cause of hospital admissions for children aged 5 to 9.
The DfE also cites ‘new polling’ from parents which reveals that 74% have a concern about their child’s nutrition, including too much sugar, too many fatty foods and not enough fruit and vegetables.
